Over 50,000 Applicants for Spanish Citizenship by Descent Under New Law

The new Ley de Memoria Democrática, or Law of Democratic Memory, has led to a surge in applications for Spanish citizenship. Since the law was passed, over 50,000 people have applied for Spanish citizenship. The majority of applicants are from Latin America, where many people of Spanish descent fled during the dictatorship. The Spanish government has said that it expects to process all of the applications within two years.

As you know, the law, which was passed in October 2022, allows people who can prove they are descendants of exiles or victims of the Franco dictatorship to apply for Spanish citizenship.

The Spanish Citizenship Council is extremely busy helping Americans and Canadians of Spanish descent qualify for and apply for Spanish citizenship within the guidelines of this exciting new legislation.
